Biography of Ki Hajar Dewantara




Raden Mas Soewardi Soerjaningrat or Ki Hadjar Dewantara was born on May 2, 1889, his birthday is then commemorated annually by the Indonesian people as National Education Day. He himself was born into a noble family. He is the son of GPH Soerjaningrat, who is the grandson of Pakualam III. Born as an aristocrat, he was entitled to education for nobles at that time.
In many books about the Biography of Ki Hadjar Dewantara, he first attended ELS, namely the Elementary School for European / Dutch children and also for the nobility. 




After leaving ELS, he then continued his education at STOVIA, a school that was created for the education of indigenous doctors in the city of Batavia during the Dutch East Indies colonial period. His name is immortalized as one of the names of the Indonesian warship, KRI Ki Hadjar Dewantara. His portrait was immortalized on the 1998 issue of 20,000 rupiah banknotes. He was confirmed as the second national hero by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Soekarno, on 28 November 1959 (Presidential Decree No. 305 of 1959, 28 November 1959).
